Data Visualization UX

Convert a static report to an interactive tool

Convert a static report to an interactive tool

Provide an interactive tool for company executives to compare their product’s user experience to competitors over time with User Testing data.

The project had been in a discovery phase for over a year. The team brought me on board to focus on telling a visual story with data in a dashboard for a new “Competitive Benchmarking” product proposal.

Analysis of the current report

Analysis of the current report

To develop a simple story, it is essential to first understand the complexities of that story. From the analysis of the current report structure, I presented the elements that cascaded from an overview of the data, to detail. This process helped to structure how we might present the data to users in our platform.

Start with a happy path

Start with a happy path

After a year long discovery exploration phase, the team was ready to design screens that matched the vision. I created a happy path to start design and build consensus from Stakeholders.

Visualizing the data

Visualizing the data

User Testing collected a large amount of data to work with. Understanding the quantifiable objects that are shared as well as topics that could reveal more detail was a starting point to visualizing the data we had.

Working directly with the lead researcher on the team and the data scientist, I began to visualize the data that I had access to. After exploring many ideas using charting applications such as Tableau and Raw, I found Parallel Coordinates worked well for Task Analysis and Radar Charts for UX Factors, our two main areas of comparison.

Protoype the vision

After several iterations, I compiled the data visualizations, and ordered the information on the screens to demonstrate the execution of the happy path. Although we progressed and the management team was bullish on the progression, they decided to pivot and pursue a different vision for the company.
